Chapter 8

Jaz slid into the worn vinyl booth across from Mia at their favorite corner diner. The mid-morning sun streamed through the windows, glinting off the chrome countertop.

"Hey, you," he said warmly, reaching out to grasp her hand. "How are you holding up with everything going on lately?"

Mia managed a faint smile, though her eyes betrayed lingering exhaustion and stress. "Oh, you know me. Hanging in there."

She took a sip of steaming coffee. "Honestly? The political pressure from higher-ups keeps mounting. But I refuse to back down."

Jaz nodded somberly, gently squeezing her hand. He admired her perseverance, but worried about the toll this crusade was taking.

"Just promise me you'll take care of yourself too. You can't pour from an empty cup," he said earnestly.

Mia sighed but nodded. "I'll try. But only if you do the same." A hint of playful sternness entered her tone. "I know you carry the weight of everything on your shoulders."

Jaz chuckled softly. "Deal. We'll get each other through this the way we always have, together."

,

A comfortable silence settled between them; hands loosely intertwined on the tabletop. In this brief respite from their struggles, they drew strength from one another. Come what may, they would face the battles ahead side by side.

Mia managed a weary smile. "The police brass are still stonewalling the investigation into your dad's case at every turn. But I refuse to let it go."

She raised an eyebrow, her tone turning solemn. "Speaking of investigations, I heard you've been working closely with Alessandra lately. How's that going?"

Jaz hesitated, his expression pensive. "It's been a complicated partnership, to say the least. I'm trying to glean intel about the syndicate through her connections."

He lowered his voice. "But her shades-of-gray morality makes me uneasy sometimes. I have to walk a fine line."

Mia nodded her eyes full of concern. "Just be careful, Jaz. Don't let her cunning manipulate you. I know your intentions are good, but she can't be trusted."

"I'm staying cautious, believe me," Jaz assured, "but you're right to remind me she has her own agenda."

Eager to shift focus, he leaned forward. "Enough about me. Any promising developments on your end we should discuss?"

Mia lowered her voice, further ensuring privacy. "I've been investigating the police officer who took over your father’s case when he went missing. There are warning signs in his past. I believe he intentionally obstructed the investigation of pursuing leads."

Jaz muttered under his breath, in frustration. "This entire conspiracy just keeps expanding. We need to expose it." He anxiously tapped his fingers on the table before continuing." Let’s have an honest conversation here. How are you holding up under all this pressure?"

Mia shook her head wryly and replied honestly "To be frank? Sometimes I have no idea, I need to make sure I do it right not just for your dad but everyone else. It's just..." She paused, looking away.

Jaz gently placed his hand over hers. "What is it? You know you can confide in me, partner."

Reluctantly Mia met his gaze. "I keep worrying that I've already made mistakes.
